The Tricks
The Tricks are London four piece Joel Hodge, Ashley Hodge, John Bisset and Eliot Crabtree who formed fairly recently after all taking a stab at performing with other acts. After being spotted by an A&R from the Unison Music Group the band were quickly whisked off to LA to begin recording demos. Since then they’ve gone from strength to strength impressing people with their live sets and gaining them fans in the likes of BBC Radio 6 DJ Chris Hawkins who recently described them as ‘the band that has got me most excited in 2012′. We caught up with the band to find out where they hang out when they’re not busy recording in hotter climates…
Joel:
Screen on the Green, Islington: I go to the cinema a lot and the majority of the time I go to the generic Cineworld or Odeon. However, when something comes out that I’m desperate and excited to see I head to Screen on the Green because it’s a real traditional cinema experience. Sit down on the sofas, have a glass of red wine and enjoy. Plus there’s no 14- year- old shits throwing popcorn at the back of your head.
John:
Nightjar, City Road, Shoreditch: Nightjar is one of those secret little underground cocktail bars where it feels like only you and the other people in there have been handed the key. With only one strictly policed unmarked door to enter, it’s where you can get away from the ever- increasing Shoredessex weekend bustle and sit back and sip on a glamourous old school cocktail or two… or ten. You do sometimes have to queue mind and be feeling more flush than usual to buy the delicious cocktails they serve, BUT, it is definitely worth it, if only for a cheeky Bugsy Malone style night- cap on the way home. Don’t tell everyone though, I don’t want to have to queue more than usual.
El:
Wilton’s Music Hall, Tower Hamlets: I’d strongly recommend Wiltons Music Hall as a great destination for a night of theatre, cinema, dancing, drinking, comedy or ping pong. I’ve been there a few times and each time I’ve had completely different experiences. Parts of the building are still falling down and deemed unsafe for the public but the parts that are safe enough are amazing. It has a Grand Main Hall which has incredible acoustics for live music and a charming little bar called ‘the mahogony bar’ where they have smaller live acts and various themed nights. Apparently it’s still in dire need of some funding to help keep it in it’s current condition and help restore the rest of the building.
Ash:
The Elms 5-a-Side Football: A little while ago we signed up to ‘The Elms 5aside’ football league in Mile End. The four of us did it with a few of our close mates. It was every Monday night and it was huge fun and great to get back into playing regularly. We actually went on to win our league but L.A was calling and unfortunately we haven’t been able to sign up again. But I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get back into football who lives locally to that area. It was great fun.
All:
The Victoria, Mile End: The Vic is a pub in Mile End, owned by one of our best mates, Alfie from Men’s Adventures. Its a lovely spot, which hosts delicious live music from all the newest bands on the block, looks brilliant and tastes brilliant… check out the homemade fresh cakes and cookies. It’s got a real chilled, cosy feel to it and has a table tennis table too. Fully recommend stopping by there for a cheeky pint. You will enjoy it!
