The Strikes In Numbers
Today thousands of public sector workers and supporters have been protesting across London and the rest of the UK against government changes in their pensions. In the build up to the protests we’ve heard lots of hype about schools closing, airports being brought to a stand still and roads being shut off. But what’s the truth? Here we take a look at the numbers behind todays action…
2000: The number of schools shut around the UK.
42: The percent of London Ambulance Service crew who have gone on strike leaving the services ‘struggling’.
0: The amount of people affected by walk outs at London’s airports and St Pancras International.
1000: The number of marches and rallies due to take place today across the UK.
20,000 – 5,000: The rough estimate, depending on what report you read, of people on the main march in London.
2: The amount of arrests in London so far for two of which were for assaulting a police worker and the other two were for being in possession of a weapon.
2million: The amount of people who have gone on strike across the country.
6000: The number of NHS operations cancelled.
135,000: The number of civil servants on strike.
1979: The only year on record that has seen a strike as big as the one today. It took place during the winter of discontent.
