The Moth & The Mirror
The Moth & The Mirror: Honestly, This World
The Moth and The Mirror are yet another band of epic proportion to emerge from Scotland in the last few years mixing the dynamics of We Were Promised Jetpacks and heartfelt intensity of Death Cab for Cutie. The band have been proclaimed as a Scottish supergroup, comprising of members taken from an array of Scottish talent including: Stacey Sievwright from The Reindeer Section and Arab Strap, Gordon Skene from Frightened Rabbit, Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow / Song of Return and Kevin McCarvel with Iain Sandilands and Peter Murch.
Their Debut Honestly, This World is a brave and confident first release that clearly displays the backgrounds of the band members. At the heart of each track is a beautiful pop song that’s built up with big riffs and a divers array of instruments that grab you from the off, with sudden drops that keep you yearning for more.
Sand out tracks are opener Everyone I know a hazy mixture of thumping drums and punchy riffs with Sievwright’s alluring vocal reminiscent of Metric’s Emily Haines. Boxes has a delicate progressive build, laden with harmonies that would comfort any lazy Sunday afternoon until it explodes into something raw and energetic out of nowhere, a dynamic shift that just seems to work so well for the band.
You get the feeling this band will deliver something fabulously addictive on stage with tracks like Beautiful Creature – a flamenco guitar/trumpet lead tune that, at 1 minute 47 seconds leads you on then slams the door in your face.
With an intriguing background and sublime set of songs The Moth and The Mirror are dead set for the airwaves and far bigger things to come. You’d be stupid not to see this band live before it’s too late.
Honestly, This World is out on November 7th via Olive Grove Records.
