Mickey Rourke to Play a Gay Rubgy Star
Yep, you read that correctly – Mickey Rourke has confirmed that he will be playing Welsh international rugby player Gareth Thomas in a biopic of the openly gay sportsman’s life.
Chatting to Alan Carr on his chatshow, the Hollywood A-lister admitted that he’d spoken to the rugby player and had discussed the film. Rourke went on to say; “I read the story. It’s one of the toughest, hardest sports in the world to play. They play with no pads… It’s a really brutal sport. To be a man who plays rugby who is gay and to live with that secret for the amount of years that Gareth had, to perform at that highest level that he performed at, it takes a lot of courage.”
Rourke saved his career with a fantastic performance in The Wrestler so there’s not doubt over his ability to play a sportmans, but the recovering drug addict and alcoholic is 22 years older than Gareth Thomas, and quite clearly not Welsh. So we at Jack are very excited to see if he can cut it with the accent…we’re thinking probably not.
