LFW: 2011 FAD Junior Awards
Finishing off day five of London Fashion Week, and the last of womenswear, we headed over to check out this year’s FAD Junior Awards catwalk show. FAD (Fashion Awareness Direct) is a charity that supports young people in their creative and fashion skills between the gap of education and the fashion industry.
This particular show featured 25 designs that had been selected from an original 100. During just five days, they created their designs at a workshop at The University of East London. Each had been inspired by the ceramic, jewellery and galleries at the V&A museum.
It was clear to see that each design had been carefully thought out and created, with a great deal of time and effort used. One of our favourites that strutted down the catwalk was created by Shanel Brown – a structured dress, with detailed, ruffled sleeves and a layer of vibrant coloured tiers at the bottom of the dress. Bright colours seemed to be a trend down the catwalk, with Tamzin O’Garro’s creation also coloured with an array of exotic primary tones.
Another which stood out from the crowd, was a floral patterned number by Gemma Halliwell. Finished with an oversized, structured laced cape that circled around the entire top half of the dress, it was later announced that this had won the Commercial Awareness award.
However, the overall winner came from Sabine Bindre. The dress was a deserving winner, with a strong, dramatic shape, sharp collars, and an innovative pattern swirl of contrasting cherry reds and black.
The night was an uplifting occasion of joy and success, proving just how important and rewarding FAD can be to young fashion designers.
