Before last week the only thing I new about Hammersmith was it’s gigantic Primark which was good for visiting to avoid the crowds. But now I’ve discovered another reason to go west – The Hampshire Hog.
It’s a gastro pub somewhat like any other gastro pub across London but it’s worth knowing about if you’re in the area. The food is a blend between pub grub and fancy restaurant dining and slightly nicer (and more expensive) than you’re average pub prices.
There’s quite a small menu which means what is there is done well – not so good for the fussy eaters among us but excellent for everyone else.
One thing you have to try is the seven-hour spiced lamb shoulder on toast with a sprinkling of pomegranate. The meat, which is all organically sourced, was very tender and the fresh taste of the fruit is a perfect partner. Cheese fans – there’s also a killer soufflé which is a real winter warmer almost like a hug from your Mum.
The posh pub grub continues for the main courses with O’shea’s of knightsbridge sirloin, chips & cafe de paris butter (steak and chips) for £19 or a comforting mushroom, spinach and goat’s cheese risotto (£14) among the options.
If you’re in need to sweet things go for the pear tart tatin (£6). You’ll have to wait 20 minutes for it to be cooked but it’s well worth it and reassuring it’s not just been popped in a microwave.
In the pub there’s a pantry where you can buy products from across London such as coffee from Exmouth market or tea from the Rare Tea Company in Primrose Hill and an impressive selection of wines to slosh down with the food.
It’s a little more than you might be used to paying for a pub but the food is organic and sourced from local companies so you’ll feel a little better about shelling out for such tasty food.
