In London there’s restaurants you pop into to grab a quick meal with a friend, you stay long enough to catch up over a starter and a main and then your gone again. And then there’s restaurants that you can sit in for hours on end labouring over good food and great wine you want to take your time over. The Grill at The Montcalm falls into the latter category.
Based just a short walk from Marble Arch tube station The Grill can be found in the up market Montcalm hotel. Upon arrival the relaxed tone of the restaurant is evident, greeted in a small reception area and shown to our table that sits in the middle of the restaurants moden surroundings it’s instantly obvious that this is a place they want you to stay and enjoy. Serving up a huge range of British cuisine with a contemporary twist and using only the best ingredients used in their dishes the menu is extensive and full of options. The menu is broken into sections (beef, lamb, pork, veal, chicken, seafood and the alternatives) with each section opening with a description of the produce used and how it is sourced.
On our visit myself and my dining partner opted for starters of fois gras torchon on roasted brioche and crab salad with peas, soy bean & pea shoots and brown crab veloute before moving onto mains of sirloin of Churchview beef and the market fish of the day which on our visit was seabass. Unlike some other hotel restaurants we’ve visited The Grill’s portions were far from sparse, beautifully presented and generous enough to really fill you up their eating experience leaves nothing to be desired. The waiting staff were both knowledgeable and helpful able to easily recommend food and wine combinations that complimented each other brilliantly.
Our visit came to an end some three and a half hours later after realising quite how much time we’d spent there and admits worries of missing the last tube but in honesty we probably could have sat there for much longer. While the prices at The Grill are at the higher end of the scale they do offer a 25% discount voucher from their website and with Valentines Day creeping up on us we couldn’t recommend this place highly enough.
