From Facebook To Nassbook At Mica Gallery
Those of you who take an interest in current events may remember that earlier this year, following a peoples revolution, the man who was dubbed Egypt’s ‘president for life’, Hosni Mubarak, was finally ousted from power and now the Mica Gallery are hosting an exhibition which celebrates the actions during and after that time.
From Facebook To Nassbook features the work of nine cross-generational contemporary Egyptian artists who work together both individually and collectively as visual cultural critics commenting on the daily practices of Egyptian life and the exhibition presents work that reflect on the build up to the revolution, its fervour and post-revolutionary hope.
The title of the exhibition was inspired by the method taken by the people’s revolution which was communicated via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter until the government eventually disabled the countries internet and the people had to reply on word of mouth (or as the Egyptian’s call it, nass). The exhibition, which runs from now until 24 July, captures the spirit of the pre and post revolution country and explores how social networking sites can break down the boundaries of social class and religious divisions.
The Mica Gallery can be found at 259A Pavillion Road, Sloane Square, London SW1X 0BP.
