Death : Southbank’s Festival for the living
Yep we know that Halloween is dead in the ground for another year but it seems that Southbank has decided we should eek out the whole death concentration a little longer.
All through January the Southbank Centre will be hosting exhibitions, shows ans talks that center around death.
Some highlights (if there can be any around such a morbid subject) are Jon Snow chairing a panel discussion about assisted dying with guests including Baroness Kennedy QC, Goodbye Mr. Muffin : a children’s play about the last days of a guinea pig and Crazy Coffins : a collection of coffins from the famous Pa Joe workshop in Ghana and Crazy Coffins in Nottingham.
‘The Ultimate Equalizer, The Grim Reaper, The Blessed Release. One thing is certain – we all have death in common and this January we defy taboos and take a look at this unknowable certainty from many angles. Through music, workshops, literature and installations, and talking with everyone from philosophers to funeral workers, we examine our attitudes towards death and why we are so reticent to talk about it. Woody Allen said that he’s not afraid to die – he just doesn’t want to be there when it happens. Do you feel the same?’
