Now, after a summer of cabin fever, recording in hallways and basements, Straylings have completed their debut album.

They will step out for their first show of 2012 headlining Camden’s Barfly on Saturday Jan 14th with special guests and musical compadres. Get hold of tickets here (cheaper than on the door!):

Self contained, mysterious – they add an elegance and restraint to an aesthetic touched upon by bands like My Morning Jacket and Calexico, while their forceful melodies and controlled feedback bears witness to the likes of PJ Harvey and even Grinderman at times. Their debut album ‘Entertainment On Foreign Grounds’ is out on March 5th so for a sneak preview head to Camden this Saturday night for your live music fix!

Tuesday 13th September marks the final of the smart urban stage; a series of exhibitions that has been making its way through Europe visiting the likes of Amsterdam, London, Barcelona and Milan. The aim is to bring together the most creative and innovative people in major International cities to discuss the future of the city.

In Frankfurt an International team of jurors will decide which of the eleven projects from the previous stages are the most innovative, groundbreaking and sustainable project and the most worthy of the smart future minds award.

Smart urban stage London winner is Bloomsbury based project, The People’s Supermarket, a totally unique, innovative and sustainable shopping experience providing good food, for, and by the people (you may remember it from the Channel 4 TV show about it earlier in the year). Co founders Kate Bull and Arthur Potts describe the People’s Supermarket as ‘a sustainable food co-operative responding to the needs of the community, providing healthy local food at reasonable prices.’ How does it work? I hear you cry. Well in order to get the cheap food, you have to become a member and pledge to work at The People’s Supermarket for a few hours a month. With no staff costs this saving is passed on to the consumer, your food is cheaper, and any profits they make go back into making the food even more affordable, meaning, unlike bigger supermarkets, there’s no big bonuses for bosses at the end of it all. Their refreshing philosophy and management approach is to buy from trusted suppliers order to give their members the choice and information they need to make informed healthy decisions about what they eat. Anyone can become a member of the People’s Supermarket, located on Lamb’s Conduit Street, Bloomsbury, and can join online at www.thepeoplessupermarket.org.

Check out the teaser video for the event in Frankfurt below and you can see all the other projects from around Europe on the smart urban stage Facebook page. We’ll be down at the final next week so keep an eye on www.whosjack.org to find out who is crowned the winner.

As of this week things are getting bad for avid Twitter users with #whyimsingle trending in London. Our reply – Is it coz you iz on that Twitter too much?

Twitter is getting more boring : Trending topics today are ‘Goodbye August’ and ‘Hello September’. Either no one give a shit about much any more or all those dull people that were never on Twitter before? They certainly are now. (here)

Eminem likes fish : At a recent Irish festival he asked for a wooden pond of Koi Carp to be added to a private garden he had backstage. Now for the general conversation, if you could have anything on a rider what would it be? (here)

You need a National Lottery ticket this weekend. The estimated amount is 100 million. Que second, hugely satisfying and depressing in equal measures conversation about what you would do with 100 ml.
The likes of New Young Pony Club, Matt Walsh and The Duke Spirit will be taking to the decks at The Hewett Street Gallery in Shoreditch in order to raise money for the growing famine crisis in East Africa. As well as each of the DJs playing a 20 minute set of ‘songs that shaped them’ there will also be prizes donated from local business such as Mason & Tyler, Rio Cinema, Wilton’s Way Cafe for a raffle and food from The Meatwagon. All proceeds will be going straight to the relief fund for Somalia with the event kicking off at 7.3o this evening at 18 Hewett Street, EC2A 3NN.

Who’s Jack writer Lara Piras went down to check out Folly For A Flyover, a summer-long programme of cinema, performance and play in Hackney Wick. Here’s what she thought of it…

Once found, one instantaneously realises this hidden treasure is well worth the hunt. Folly for a Flyover is the company behind a subtle nod to the recreation of the portrayal of cinema. A purpose (hand) built mini stadium with a projector screen, genially looking out over Regent canal is situated in the delightfully artsy borough of Hackney Wick, which boasts the majority of the east end’s artist’s spaces. It’s a find, an absolute gem. So what is it exactly I hear you ask? It’s a platform for showcasing events. By day it’s a café, also holding creative workshops and boat rides, yes boat rides! By night it’s a space allowing creative minds to come together to share a unique experience whilst viewing screenings of classic and alternative cinema, live scores, light shows and other performances.

So I went ahead, took the initiative and cycled on down there. On Friday that is, where Folly was holding an evening of audio shorts, I went to see what the fuss was all about.

Upon walking down the steep pathway down to the canal you are immediately hit by the inimitable surroundings. The construction is, okay, I must admit a little less structurally sound than I was expecting but all the same the use of wood to imitate brick is just architecturally delightful. There’s a hidden bar inside the structure selling wine, beer, popcorn and peanuts and an outside space with again, man made chairs and tables and at night you can even sit in the boats and sip away until your heart’s content, and this is what I, as one can imagine, did for the remainder of the evening, all whilst listening to the sweet sound of Latin American music.

Friday’s event was put on by ‘In The Dark’, which you may know commissions experimental radio stories and was also curated by one of their members – Nina Garthwaite. The evening was cut into three sections as not to tire our overworked ears, (you’d be surprised, even as an adult, how difficult it is to simply sit and listen), and consisted of nine shorts especially made for Folly themselves.

There were a few that stood out for me, one was ‘The Books’ produced by Sarah Cuddon which (in my interpretation) was an interview or conversation with a cockney about his obsession with books. This was of the most witty by far, ending with, “I like books, the only time I get a bit of peace and quiet is when I’m with my books, my wife knows not to disturb me when I’m reading.” I’m sure a few of the audience could relate there. Another I particularly enjoyed was ‘A Sense of Place’ produced by Tony Hill. This was enthralling as it sucked you into the life of a woman who was born blind. You got a sense of how it would feel to be blind and the obstacles that would come in your way. But then you were forced to ask the question of whether they are obstacles? Getting on and off a train, even walking down a busy street, as to her, it’s the norm. Her sense of imagination was wild, her ability to describe in the most descriptive of manners was moving, maybe we should open our eyes a little wider.

All in all the shorts were witty, expertly performed and genuinely invigorated your imagination to view things you couldn’t see. Visuals at time can be limiting and can tell too much. Folly for a Flyover allows one to experience the aspect of how audio overrides visual at times. The show was an eye opener and an experience one shall not forget. But be quick, this beast has only two more weekends of events. Get down a.s.a.p. and I’m sure you’ll join me in the campaign to stop the disassembly of it come September.

One of Jack’s favourite jewellery shops, Tatty Devine, are opening the doors of their Brick Lane store from tomorrow (Wednesday) until September to host an event called Girls + Zines. The idea is to celebrate the fanzine culture in an event that’s been curated by BFR mag founder, Barbara Ryan that will have several zines created by girls on display for you to come and flick through. Attendees are encouraged to bring along their own fanzines if they have them to swap or just to give to others to read for a few minutes.

Tatty Devine can be found at 236 Brick Lane, London, E2 7EB.
