BOY, Jazz Café
If this is your first encounter with the musical outfit BOY, what springs to mind? George? Zone? In Da Corner? Well forget all that because soon this Swiss/German duo will be the first and foremost that Google spits out at you.
Valeska Steiner & Sonja Glass make up one of the most refreshingly talented and captivating new bands on the emerging circuit. As they quickly and quietly appeared on the stage at Camden’s Jazz Café most of the audience were unaware of their presence until their blend of Feist-esque acoustic tunes gave everyone a gentle clip round the ear and shut them up. Like a female Kings of Convenience the subtle harmonies and intertwining acoustic guitar melodies make for an addictive yet soothing combination.
Usually joined by a full band featuring Thomas Hedlund of French alt-masters Phoenix, the dainty duo spent half an hour setting the standards for the rest of the evening. Their charming single Little Numbers proved the girls had not only mastered a second language but were able to manipulate it into heart-warming stories of love, loss, parties and working in cafés.
Sadly this was a one off appearance but with a record out in the spring London gleefully awaits the return of BOY.
