Birdy By Birdy
At the tender age of 15, Birdy has one of the most naturally astounding voices around. Her self titled first full ascent into the public ear is an eclectic collection of covers, twisted and turned into a consistent string of her own tunes.
You may have already heard her heartfelt version of Bon Iver‘s Skinny Love but the album kicks off with Phoenix’s 1901, a quaint piano lead take on the synthy pop masterpiece. Once you hit The District Sleeps alone Tonight, originally by The Postal Service, her ability to blend beautiful harmonies and intricate piano playing as a platform for such as striking vocal hits it’s peak.
Birdy is clearly in the running for big things but this record, for all it’s appeal only really does one thing through out, albeit very well. Individually the songs stand out as great works but seem to blur into each other after a while. The Naked and Famous’ Young Blood is another highlight which thankfully sees Birdy raise the dynamics of the song with more beats and instrumentation.
With so much ahead of her Birdy’s first full studio album is a confident effort and will put her in good stead for what lies ahead and if you want more of what you’ve heard already then this is a record for you.
Birdy by Birdy … is out on November 7th and catch her live at Mencap’s Little Noise Sessions on November 26th along with Example, Ed Sheeran and Fenech Soler at St.John-at-Hackney Church.
